Jay Hughes wants to be LT

State Representative Jay Hughes (D-The Grove) issued the following statement.

Rep. Jay Hughes Kicks Off Statewide Campaign Tour of 82 Counties, 362 Communities

Veteran, Small Business Owner Launches Lt. Governor Campaign: “Imagine a better Mississippi”

Today Jay Hughes officially announced his candidacy for Lieutenant Governor of Mississippi with a series of stops including Jackson, Biloxi, Hattiesburg, Meridian and Oxford. Hughes was elected to the legislature three years ago, after serving as an alderman in his hometown of Oxford. During the debate over school funding, he ran for state representative on a platform for public education, mental health, and roads and bridges.

Hughes, an Army veteran, has long held the belief that “It ALL starts with education!” and plans to continue pursuing an agenda that puts a great public education first for each and every child in Mississippi. A long-time businessman and real estate attorney, Hughes says he is ready to take much-needed common sense and transparency to an office he believes has left too many people and issues out in the cold in recent years.

“Career politicians and the political party elite are so consumed with getting and keeping power and control that they only remember their big campaign donors and lobbyists, and forget everyone else, particularly the working class.” Hughes continued, “I’m sick and tired of all the backroom secrecy and sweetheart deals, while the real people have no clue what is really going on. It is past time to make people and basic services a priority: Education, Mental Health, Healthcare and Roads & Bridges. Those are the realities that attract quality jobs and put food on the table.”

Hughes comes from a poor, hardworking family, with his dad working in the oilfield and his mom retiring as a truck driver. Money was always tight and the family counted pennies, drank powdered milk, and were unable to do even the most basic things because they lived paycheck-to-paycheck. “The sad reality is that too many Mississippians still live this way, regardless of how hard they try,” said Hughes.

Jay’s grandfather, Poose, was the most important person in his life. His grandparents were always poor with money, but always rich with happiness. They entered the Great Depression with a mule and 10 acres of land. The mule died and the dustbowl killed their first and only crop, so his grandfather worked for the rest of his life for the city sewer department, digging sewer ditches by hand. He proudly and often told Jay, “If you don’t do anything else, son: ‘Work Hard and do right.’”

“That’s the best education and life lesson I ever got,” said Hughes. “I didn’t get my values from some National Political Party or TV program. I got them from my parents and grandparents at home, at church, and the School of Hard Knocks.”

He attributes his commitment to finding real solutions for real people to the many jobs he had as he worked throughout his childhood and school. In addition to volunteering and serving in the U. S. Army, his work experience began at age 10 when he sold seeds and Grit newspapers door-to-door. He later held jobs ranging from oyster-shucker to busboy, from oilfield laborer to truck driver, and carpenter to builder.

It wasn’t until Hughes’ experience in the U.S. Army that his passion for education began to click. He began asking himself, “If we are all created equal, why aren’t our schools?” If it weren’t for his education and teachers that went the extra mile for him, Hughes would not be where he is today. “It’s why I want to imagine an education system in which all schools have the same great resources and buildings. Where every child has the teacher it needs. Where every child is graduating from high school, and is ready for a job or college. We have to make public education for our 477,000 children, and true earning skills for all Mississippians the highest priorities in the state and our biggest economic tool to attract real full-time jobs that pay real wages,” said Hughes.

In addition to Hughes’ service in the legislature, he is also a volunteer substitute teacher in his home school district, and continues to maintain his real estate law practice in Oxford.
Representative Hughes has been married to the former Cris Moroney, of Natchez, for 25 years. They have a daughter, Patricia, who is a sophomore public school student, and rescue dog Sadie.
“Imagine an education system where ALL schools have the same great resources and buildings. Imagine classrooms where every one of them has the teacher it needs. Imagine roads without pot holes and bridges without restrictions. Imagine mental health and addiction treatment for all Mississippians who need it.”

–Representative Jay Hughes

All for it. Jay's a good, smart guy.

Don't know which is worse - that he's a Democrat, or that he's from Oxford.

It's always odd when someone is a member of the dumbocrat party, but chooses to display conservative views.

Does Jay realize he is running for Lt Governor, not emperor?

I suppose you gotta start somewhere......

He'll get about the same number of votes as Tim Johnson.

Huh, and he never mentions that he is a Democrat. Wonder why???

"Imagine roads without potholes (sic) and bridges without restrictions"...ok, but I'll need to take a hit off of this crack pipe first.

Jay used to be a Republican. In fact, he attended President George W. Bush's swearing in and the parade. He's got a photo of Barbara and George walking in the parade. Just he became a Democrat doesn't mean that he will fully support what that party stands for, For God's sake, I'm a Republican and I don't support fully what our leaders are doing to us - look at our bridge, our roads, etc. Look at Jay's announcement on his facebook page - I"m sure that even Dilbert can live up to those values!

Jay is always the smartest guy in the room. Anyone who's met him know he cares about one thing: JAY!

@ 4:02, what values? Taking a walk on an abortion vote since he decided to run for higher office? Voting to legalize marijuana with no restrictions? Suing people we disagree with?

@ 4:21, you must know Jay in real life and not just on Facebook.

Mississippians elect the best politicians that money can buy.

I've heard him on radio and seen him on TV. He exudes arrogance. Plus he's a democrat (even though the above democrat attempts to explain how that is meaningless).

You mad homeboy?

Things kinda slow down at the car wash today?

If Mississippi likes rich, slick politicians, then put your money on Hughes. Slick as goose mess.

Powdered milk is where I stopped reading. He also forgot to mention an outhouse and corn cobs.

If he wants to vote to legalize marijuana, that's a plus in my book. It ought to be treated no different than a tomato plant.

"Jay is always the smartest guy in the room. Anyone who's met him know he cares about one thing: JAY!"

"If Mississippi likes rich, slick politicians, then put your money on Hughes. Slick as goose mess."

Not quite - next year promises one of the best ever.

Jay Hughes - as noted above, slick as goose mess, rich, also noted exudes arrogance. But don't overlook his opponent, Dilbert Hosemann. Every one of those statements fit him as well. Looks like it is going to be the two absolute arrogant, think themselves to be the smartest person in the room, having to face off and fight it out to see who really is the smartest. Or, at least, the most arrogant. And the slickest as goose mess candidate in the Lt Gov race.
Problem is - we might be stuck with one or the other of them. Please dear God, give us another choice!

Where is Shawn O'Hara when we really could use him?

I knew it. This guy has been raising his profile for years. All he can think to do is raise taxes and throw even more money at a broken education system. But it’s enough to woo the low information crowd. Pass.

This guy thinks “Education” will succeed with more $$$. Meanwhile, JPS revealed this week that they issue Minimum Grades. When they discussed going to a 0-100 scale, the district said it would greatly harm their graduation rate! Yep, they just need more money. That’s the ticket.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
