Rick Cleveland looks at upcoming college football season

It is a little known fact that William Faulkner, the most famous Mississippi bard, once played quarterback for Oxford High School, a tall task for someone who stood 5 feet, 5 inches short. This was long before face masks, and Faulkner, history tells us, suffered a broken nose. History tells us a lot more. Wrote Faulkner, ever so accurately : “The past is never dead. It's not even past.”

He was spot-on. We always should heed the past before considering the future, and that's important to keep in mind as we head into the 2016 college football season.

The Southern Poverty Law Center is attempting to knock charter schools out of business in Mississippi.  It sued Governor Phil Bryant, Jackson Public School District, and the Mississippi Department of Education in Hinds County Court recently as it seeks to block the funding of three charter schools in Jackson.  The SPLC is apparently waging a lawfare campaign against charter schools in Mississippi and other states.  SPLC attorney Will Bardwell whines to anyone who will listen that SPLC is not against charter schools per se, just their funding in Mississippi.  Uh-huh.  The SPLC fight against charter schools in New Orleans gives the game plan away.

Teaching children “virtue” is the key to solving poverty, insists a reader and regular critic. That’s how we break the “cycle of dependency,” he said.

Well, “indoctrinate” threw me off. Reminded me of the old Soviet Union brainwashing children as well as my delightful time in boot camp. So, I thought, while it may be permissible for parents to indoctrinate children, that’s hardly the role for schools.

Bill Crawford: Tax Cuts v Tax Needs

With legislators looking at taxes, some of us should be worried, some thrilled.
The need to study taxes results from weakening tax revenues along with a sluggish economy, and also because the largest tax cut in state history is pending.
Legislative leaders know they need a consistent, dependable tax base to fund state government. Republican legislators, now a dominant majority, know their voter base hates taxes and wants tax cuts. Where is the balance point – is there one – between these two points of view?
And, then, there is the real question. Who will pay?

Blow-up in Bay St. Louis

It appears the new law that limits the use of interim appointments by Mayors created a volcanic eruption in Bay St. Louis only twelve days after it took effect.  The Mayor appointed a friend to the position of building inspector on an interim basis - over six years ago.   SB #2587 bars a municipality from paying the salary of an interim appointee after six months.  Unfortunately for our building inspector, the bill did not include a grandfather clause.  Thus any interim appointments who were serving for at least six months on July 1 suddenly found their pay checks cut off.  However, the Mayor and the City Attorney had a few things to say about the new law.  Things didn't go the way they planned as the city attorney found himself out of a job.  Slabbed.org attended the meeting and reported on the whole fiasco on its blog and Twitter:

Hinds County Circuit Judge Winston Kidd denied an attempt by the city of Madison to transfer a lawsuit to Madison County.  Robert Pugh was injured during a Madison police chase that began at the Target store in Jackson and ended by Gallatin Street in Jackson.   JJ reported last December:

Medicaid or bust?

Expand Medicaid! Expand Medicaid! Expand Medicaid! So goes the mantra mindlessly mouthed by many in Mississippi.  The lure of Medicaid expansion is easy to understand.  Many Mississippians lack access to health care.  Many more can't afford to pay for health care.  The Affordable Care Act held out a golden branch to the states: expand Medicaid and the federal government would pick up the tab for several years.  However, and there is always a however, the golden branch might turn to fool's gold as the states eventually have to pay for 10% of the Medicaid expansion costs.  There is now a growing body of data to review on the results of Medicaid expansion.  John Daniel Davidson did so in a column published in National Review earlier this year:

CL drops the ball, WLBT picks it up & runs with it.

WLBT reporter David Kenney laid down some serious wood in his reporting on the Mississippi Department of Education audit of Jackson Public School earlier this week.  Kudos to Mr. Kenney for actually reading the report and telling his audience what was actually in it, unlike another reporter at the state newspaper. See for yourself.

Ivon dropped indictment against (alleged) drug dealer that he presented.

It appears former Hinds County Assistant District Attorney Ivon Johnson was involved in the controversial dismissal of an indictment against a suspected drug dealer in 2014 even though he presented it to the grand jury.  Johnson pleaded guilty in federal court last week to accepting bribes in exchange for providing favorable treatment to defendants.  JJ reported in November 2014:

JPS third-grade reading scores improve, media can't be bothered.

One wouldn't know it from reading the Clarion-Ledger  but the Jackson Public Schools District made a substantial improvement in the third grade "reading-gate" tests this year.  JPS students performed very poorly on the tests last year as 28% of the district's third-grades failed the test.  The Mississippi Department of Education began testing for third-grade literacy last year after the Legislature passed the mandate as part of Governor Bryant's education reform package.

MS Litigation Review asks if MC Law School should exist.

Should Mississippi College continue to operate a law school? The question was asked in a column posted by attorney Ken Walley on the Mississippi Litigation Review website.  It is no understatement to say the law school is facing its share of challenges right now.  Mr. Walley wrote:

Steven Turner is back in jail

Northeast Jackson's newest star hoodlum is back in jail.   Little Steven Turner celebrated his eighteenth birthday last December by getting out of the Youth Detention Center and going on a small burglary spree.  He stayed in jail for a few weeks before he posted bond.  However, Turner just couldn't help himself and allegedly began robbing again.  Hinds County Circuit Judge Winston Kidd revoked his bond and sent him back to jail on July 29.

Rick Cleveland: We knew #4

In Mississippi, we knew Brett Favre long before he started an NFL record 321 consecutive games, long before he threw 508 NFL touchdowns, and long before he threw for nearly 72,000 yards.

We knew No. 4 before became a three-time NFL MVP, before he was an 11-time Pro Bowler, before he played through injuries that would have required hospital care for normal humans, and before he was generally recognized as the toughest hombre in sports.

The Clarion-Ledger stands up and fights.

The Clarion-Ledger is fighting the  sealing of several files and documents in cases involving Hinds County District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith.  One problem in reporting this entire saga is there is another fight going on behind closed doors that involves in varying degrees two Circuit judges, a Special Master, the District Attorney, and several Assistant Attorneys General.  They are all public officials and these documents are all public records yet the public is not able to see them nor see what their public officials are doing.  The newspaper said enough and filed several motions in court.... which of course were sealed.  Anna Wolfe and Molly Bryant reported in the Clarion-Ledger a few days ago:

Did Mississippi get hustled again?

Remember that $36 million help the Mississippi legislature gave earlier this year  to Edison Chouest? It appears the company played a similar game in Louisiana using the same tactics: promise jobs, promise investment,  or promise the world and watch the politicians fall all over themselves as they rush to dole out the dough.   Unfortunately for Louisiana and the working people who pay the bills, this friendly bout of crony capitalism has not worked out too well.  Fox 8 (NOLA) reported Friday:

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.

Trollfest '07

Jackson Jambalaya is the home of Trollfest '07. Catch this great event which promises to leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Sonjay Poontang and his band headline the night with a special steel cage, no time limit "loser must leave town" bout between Alan Lange and "Big Cat"Donna Ladd following afterwards. Kamikaze will perform his new song F*** Bush, he's still a _____. Did I mention there was no referee? Dr. Heddy Matthias and Lori Gregory will face off in the undercard dueling with dangling participles and other um, devices. Robbie Bell will perform Her two latest songs: My Best Friends are in the Media and Mama's, Don't Let Your Babies Grow up to be George Bell. Sid Salter of The Clarion-Ledger will host "Pin the Tail on the Trial Lawyer", sponsored by State Farm.

There will be a hugging booth where in exchange for your young son, Frank Melton will give you a loooong hug. Trollfest will have a dunking booth where Muhammed the terrorist will curse you to Allah as you try to hit a target that will drop him into a vat of pig grease. However, in the true spirit of Separate But Equal, Don Imus and someone from NE Jackson will also sit in the dunking booth for an equal amount of time.
