Teen killed in wreck. (2nd update)

A male teen was killed and another seriously injured in a wreck that took place by John Deer Landscaping on Fannin Landing Circle today.  The driver and passengers were all males and ranged in age from 17 to 19 years old.  The deceased is Cole Kirby.  He was a member of the MRA baseball team and the National Honor Society.  The other teens are Peyton Horton, Parker Madeo, and Tyler Price.  They are all in critical condition.

The boys were riding in a 2000 Jeep Wrangler.  Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey said the Jeep went off of the road and the driver overcompensated in trying to get back on the road.  The Jeep flipped several times.  Sheriff Bryan Bailey said his office is investigating.

Update (9:00 AM, 7/5/16): Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey issued this statement:

The school also sent out this email to parents:

Dear MRA Family,

Our hearts are heavy this morning as we write this e-mail. Yesterday, Monday, July 4th there was a car accident involving two of our senior students, Peyton Horton and Cole Kirby, and two other Rankin county students. It is with great sadness that we tell you we lost Cole Kirby, the son of Sherry and Bo Kirby and brother of MRA alum, Tyler. Please be in prayer for the Kirby family as they cope with this loss. When we know further details about the funeral arrangements we will pass them along.

At this time, Peyton is in ICU and will have surgery today to repair damaged vertebrae and is expected to make a full recovery. We ask that you pray for Peyton and the Horton family during this time.

The other students involved, Parker Madeo and Tyler Price, are in ICU. While they have serious injuries they are not life threatening. Please keep these young men and their families in your prayers.

MRA will open our high school gym from 6:15 p.m. – 8:15 p.m. tonight as a place to pray for these boys and their families.

Speed kills

Anonymous said...

It wasn't speed. He was forced off the road by some other driver and over corrected to get back on.

When you roll over several times, you are driving too fast

Speed limit is 35 per 2009 ordinance.

Parents' nightmare.

Sorry to hear.

So very sad. Your life can change in a second. These parents have lost a son, and many have lost a friend. Prayers for all

Jeeps have a terrible reputation for rollovers. Narrow vehicle and drivers think they are in the woods.

Speed limit is not 35 out at the John Deere Landscaping stretch. Regardless, prayers and comfort for all involved and their families. Tragedy struck these families.

This was an unfortunate event for all involved and horrific accident scene. Speed was likely a contributing factor. I was outside at the time and saw the vehicle fly by at a very high rate of speed with the driver over the double yellow line. When the SO came by enroute to the scene, I knew the jeep had likely had a horrible accident. Thoughts and prayers to the victims and family members.

"JJ has obtained the name of the deceased but is withholding publication due to notification of kin. "

My son & his friends were with these guys earlier in the day. The next of kin is well aware of his demise and has requested privacy.

What is the condition of the critically injured passenger? The other two had minor injuries, or so I was told.

Thanks for the heads-up on this KF. After we submitted our morning JJ monitoring report to Sam R Hall he went ahead and had Therese write up the story. As always, without mentioning you and your efforts. Cheers.

Speed does not kill.

Sudden deceleration kills.

Being ejected from a moving vehicle kills.

A tragic loss nonetheless. Prayers for those injured.

CL has listed those involved in their article, but there was not much info about the 3 surviving the accident.

Wise parents should know and consider the hazards before giving (or providing)a jeep to their kids. These are only slightly better than a four-wheeler.

Prayers to these families. I know the sweet boy that lost his life, and it is devastating news. My son was friends with him.
Newer jeeps are no more prone to flipping than any other SUV on the road and are actually safer due to the roll cage. This was not the parents fault for providing their child with a jeep. Just like any other vehicle - jeeps should be driven with respect but they are nothing like a 4-wheeler.

Two of the students involved attended MRA. Below is a letter MRA sent to their students/families. This letter was copied from MSNEWS Now.

You have got to be a jeep salesperson.

Your last sentence is the kicker... these are young, inexperienced kids... greatly challenged and distracted in groups.

You don't think parents should realize the possibilities or exercise concern over vehicle types only because YOU would drive slower and more safely.

But, yes, they are slightly better than four-wheelers.

I am not a jeep salesperson. Just stating what I know from jeep professionals (that I do know) who drive them, build them and work on them, but none of that matters - the vehicle does not matter - Families are grieving a precious boy who is no longer with us and three others lives have been changed forever.

Apparently not wearing seat belts is a contributing factor with the possibility of others. It is summer, adolescents go stupid and do the very things they know not to do. Parents aren't to blame.

....Dear Father above,
Please comfort the families and friends of these boys. Heal those still with us and welcome the precious soul you called home.

Amen

All these stupid comments!!! Obviously YOU never lost a child or a child family member!! It doesn't matter how it happens! It's traumatic to EVERYONE involved so leave your stupid comments to yourself and think about the families involved abs what they are going through! They don't need your high and mighty comments telling them they were horrible for buying them a jeep or their kids were dumb for not wearing seatbealts or they don't know how to drive! Put yourself in their shoes and see how much you would like those comments!! You wouldn't!!!! So shut up your mouths and pray for peace and understanding for these families! ESPECIALLY the kid that was driving!!

What are "Jeep Professionals"? And why would a random person in this area know SEVERAL of them?

Anonymous said...

I feel for each and everyone involved and my prayers go out to all involved and those having to respond to this tragedy and seeing a young man full of potential pass away. We never know where life leads us. We just have to trust God and know that in events like this the ones hurt are in his care.

I hope that the attorneys don't line up begin their push to find blame or fault and cause animosity. I understand these young men were inseparable and very close. If any attorneys are reading this, I know somewhere you all have a heart and feelings although you have been taught to perform your profession and gravitate to situations such as this. Hopefully you as attorneys and family men you will respect this time the family needs to heal. Money can't solve all issues.

Regardless of the cause of the accident, a young man has lost his life! Nothing can bring him back. This is not the time to be placing blame on anyone or anything! It is a time to pray for this family and the other boys and their families...only God can get them through this, the worst time in their lives!

At one time auto manufactures were forced to send out warning stickers to be attached to the jeep to warn of the danger of roll overs.
Jeeps are not like other vehicles. Salesmen can try to tell you that but common sense should tell you better.

lifted jeeps get a well known issue call the "death wobble" that can lead to the loss of control.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
