Madison PD looking for hit & run driver

The Madison Police Department issued the following press release:

On October 21, 2014 at approximately 6:45 pm a bicyclist from Madison was struck by a vehicle on Old Canton Road at the south city limits.  The cyclist was returning home from a ride on the Natchez Trace.  The vehicle that struck the cyclist did not stop and left the scene of the accident.  The vehicle was described by a witness as a brown or possibly tan older model vehicle.  Investigators were able to collect some debris believed to have come from the vehicle as well as tire marks left from a skid.  This evidence will hopefully lead to the identification of the vehicle that left the scene. The victim was taken to University Medical Center and was in stable condition.  Anyone with any information about this accident is asked to call the Madison Police Department at (601)856-6111.

Roads were designed for cars. Not cars and bikes. Get off the fucking roads.

First of all, I hope the cyclist will be ok. Second, I hope they catch the person who did it and left the scene. Third, no knowledge of the circumtances surrounding this incident, but I wish many of the cyclists in Madison (and some runners as well) would use better judgement when venturing out onto the roads. Seems like many enjoy a ride on some not so bicycle friendly roads (Rice Road, for example) during peak traffic hours. They are not only endangering themselves, but putting motorists at risk as well.

11:41am Road rage much?

11:41, so roads were designed for cars but they were not designed for cars?

Get over yourself.

Roads were DESIGNED for all types of travel. Horse, Car, Tractor, Bike, Pedestrian, etc etc etc.

Roads are ENGINEERED to handle the stresses automobiles put on them.

Get over yourselves

Guess I'm a redneck too. Your a fool to bike on the road. As someone told me once, you want to be right and dead or cripple or you want to use the sense God gave you and be safe. God gave all the choice to be smart or fools.

Anonymous said...

@1:08. Yea....but the human body isn't designed to handle the stress an automobile can put on it. Are people this stupid. Everyone is drunk on the road day and night, it's called a cell phone.

Anonymous said...

@12:30 I can bet they weren't riding a bike with huge chunks of metal whizzing past them. So my guess is they were safe at home or inside a vehicle with a roll bar, seat belt and air bag. I'm just guessing.

I don't know why people have to argue about whether cyclists should or shouldn't be on the roads.

It is the law that cyclists can use all roads, and cars are, by law, required to give at least 3 feet when passing.

That's it. There is no debate. If you have a problem with it, advocating vehicular manslaughter isn't exactly the most productive way of going about changing the law.

Someone's friend, spouse, child, parent, etc. is in the hospital for following the law. It would seemingly take a psychopath to then blame them for their injuries.

@11:41 is a terrible human, and I hope he or she realizes that at some point in his or her miserable existence.

Anonymous said...

2:13 should work for the CDC....WE HAVE LAWS....PROTOCOLS.....THERE IS NO DEBATE!!!! Well those laws and protocols aren't helping that guy in the hospital. We have laws for a lot of things, it doesn't mean they keep you safe esp if your an idiot.

You numbskulls who are reciting the 3 foot law have no idea (nor do I) what the circumstances of this accident were. I doubt there would be skid marks if the car was riding too closely to the cyclist. More than likely one or the other pulled in front of the other. Nobody knows, at this juncture, who was at fault.

I watch colorfully-clad tight-assed cyclists of both sexes every day blowing through stop signs, not yielding and coming out of the blue into traffic lanes. I regret the fact that our legislature and lettuce-heads like Gene Magee advocate bicycles riding along in traffic lanes, but that's the law. And, although it's the law, you're still a damned fool to put your lives at risk simply because the law might be on your side (in certain instances).

Anonymous said...

2:13 makes a good point, we should pursue a law suit. And how do you know the cyclist followed the law? Did he move to the side of the road to allow the car to pass? Most likely the asshole stayed right in the middle of the road like most of them do.

Using the roads is a PRIVILEGE. Not a right. Hence the 'road and privilege tax' that car owners pay to drive their cars on the roads. Why don't bikes have to pay the same tax.

The only reason it's legal is because the Director of MDOT is one of these cyclist assholes.

And the three foot rule is bullshit. It endangers motorist as most of these assholes won't even move to the side of the road. So we have to drive into oncoming traffic because they believe they have a right to ride their damn bikes in the middle of the road.

Anyone ever actually read the law? Not only is it legal, but it is encouraged to pull up behind these assholes and steadily blow on the horn. To let them know you intend to pass, of course. The assholes are also required to move over when you try to pass. So lets start documenting the assholes breaking the law and start filing some complaints. Maybe if enough assholes start getting tickets they'll ride on one of many of the bike paths paid for with road and privilege taxes (car tags).

Agree that cyclists should get off the roads when we've built them dedicated paths. That would distinguish a douchebag cyclist from an innocent one on the road.

Exactly where on the roadway was the bike rider when they were struck by the car? Within 3 feet of the edge of the road? Does anyone here know the answer to that? Nowhere in that report is the answer, yet you claim the rider was following the law. Just how do you know that?
All you people that love to sanctimoniously state that "there is a 3-foot clearance law" are well aware that the majority of riders don't follow all the roadway laws that cars are required to. You know; same road, same rules. For all anyone here knows, that rider was illegally turning, riding in the middle of the road, etc. We ALL have witnessed riders doing that. Save the freaking sermon. Get. Over. Yourself.

Anonymous said...

One, you are correct, not all cyclists follow the rules of the road, but neither do 99% of the people going 70mph on I-55 right now.

Two, no we don't know if the cyclist was following the law, but leaving the scene of an accident IS breaking the law.

Biker Dude- said...

Yup, they say I can ride in the roadway... so I TRUST others to fully appreciate my DEMAND for my space. NOT!

I guess that's kinda like I can go hiking in the deep woods in late Nov/Dec and surely I can TRUST hunters to appreciate my DEMAND to do so.

Details may prove otherwise on this incident but I maintain that common sense is not riding with many cyclists out there today.

Been a cyclist until run off road twice to avoid head-on collision on the Trace by asshole in car not even in his own lane, and I was ONE foot from side of road on my OWN side as I know many drivers are inattentive and distracted, texting, eating and not really paying attention to anything that does not directly threaten them.

Nobody knows details regarding this accident other than the driver left the scene, which is a crime no matter whether he/she hit a cyclist or a car. Cyclists have done much to engender the anger on display by some of (presumed drivers) commentators on this site by their own disregard for the laws themselves and inconsiderate/rude behaviour, such as running red lights and riding two or 3 persons abreast on Steed Road for the Tues/Thurs ride out of Holmes CC (Yes I am talking to you folks in Jackson Metro Cycling!).

Cyclists have a right to ride safely on the roads according to the law but have an obligation to follow the law, as do drivers. You haters need to lighten up,or at least start pissing on joggers on the roads too. Cyclists need to respect traffic and themselves share the road.

Anonymous said...

Not sure where on OCR this was, but there is a side walk that runs the majority of the way into Madison. Would be nice if riders would utilize the sidewalks when possible.

CDL said...

you 4 wheelers and cyclist give us commercial drives a hard time. Cyclist if you see a big truck/bus behind you pull over because we don't have speed to get around you we are not like the 4 wheelers. Cyclist we have 10 gears to go through by the time we reach 60 miles per hour...that takes awhile.. You 4 wheeler don't brake check us because you're piss off at us, or cut us off because your lost. Yall don't want an 80,000 pound transport truck running you over.. it isn't pretty...

I'm sure many in the Madison area have seen this guy riding his bike. It's one of those low riders that's about 6 inches off the ground. I almost hit this guy once. It's hard to see someone sitting down that low to the ground, and it's dark at 6:45. It's 6:30 here now and there is very little light left.

Anonymous said...

Sure, cyclists have the right to share, but they are darn stupid if they think their heads won't splatter when they are hit by a car that doesn't see them in time. I quit riding because stupid rude riders give gits to inattentive drivers. Sorry this guy got smashed, but dem is the breaks and in Darwinism, the stupid are culled from the herd.

This guy, should he live, has hopefully learnt his lesson and won't be a dork unaware of his surroundings or the danger he causes. For even if the driver didn't run off, the rider would still have been crunched.

If you don't know the difference between 'your' and 'you're', then you probably ARE a Redneck. Then again, most Rednecks I know can spell and write pretty well. Maybe the social class for people who cannot distinguish between 'your' and 'you're' would be WHITE TRASH. That's a step down from 'Redneck'.

This was apparently between the bridge over Brashears creek and the Natchez Tr bridge over OCR. It's only a gravel trail for a few hundred feet (east side). Thats's also the line between R'land & Madison. But, I guess it's possible he was on the west side of OCR and could have been zinged by a car entering the Nat Trace entrance to access the Trace.

Shoulda been on the gravel.

@7:31 this is one of the better threads contrasting pro's and con's. Then comes along one of these punctuation Nazi's that comes out of the woodwork that thinks their immature argument over what is usually someone's hasty typing skills. You were one of those shoved-in-a locker-at-school-a lot-kids growing up. Nerd, I believe, is the term the kids used.

Good post 5:25, and I agree with you regarding the joggers. Would be nice if Madison PD (and others) would nicely pull over and ask these folks, particularly the ones who run in packs pre and post daylight hours to exercise caution and better judgement. Not sure if there are any laws on the books that can actually be enforced or not. At least the gal who used to run in the turn lane on Rice Road at 7:00 AM with headphones in her ears has apparently stopped.

And I run and bike, but I try to exercise more common sense and courtesy than many folks I see out and about.

And the reason has absolutely nothing to do with bike riders and cars. It has to do with demographics.

6:33 raises the point I thought of. Sunset was at 6:21 on the 21st. I've ridden in the dark before with a flashing light, but it's certainly a poor risk to take. I wonder what lights the unlucky victim had?

Mississippi Drivers: 20% are young adults texting as they drive, 10% are older adults diabetic with sugar levels through the roof and seeing double as they drive, 10% under the influence of something, alcohol, meth, etc., 25% elderly and unable to see, then 25% of MS drivers just dumb as a damn broke hammer. Now...you're gonna ride your bike in the street?

Anonymous said...

just because you can ride on any road you want to on a bicycle doesn't mean that it is intelligent to ride on 463(or name your local busy two lane road) at rush hour...

Coming back to work after lunch today. 1:15 p.m. Was riding behind a bike rider, all dressed up in his stretchy clothes, for about a block. Wasn't trying to pass, as we were approaching a stop sign. He looked back at me, cut across in front, BLEW THROUGH THE STOP SIGN, and made a left turn from the oncoming traffic lane. Was clearly someone that rides regularly, and just as clearly, one of you biking jerks that think you don't have to follow the rules of the road.

Long time road cyclist here, 30yrs in tri-county area. I have seen it all and then some, gotten in a fight roadside, never serious incident with car. But I have to say I am embarrassed to see the number and intellect of the 'get off my road' crowd here. Will never understand how someone in a multi-ton ac vehicle can get so furious over having to brake for a moment, then hit the gas again. White trash is right...

Long time mountain biker here. Have to say I'm embarrassed to see the number of "my road too, get over it" crowd here.
However, I DO understand how drivers get angry over the "I'll ride wherever and however I want" and "I'm better than you rednecks" effete seat-sniffing jerks. I'll just bet that you'll be the first one to NOT obey traffic laws, and then complain. Asshole.

Just wait till you are in the loft of your hay shed on a rural popular bike riding road and three probably married dudes stop in and get their knees dirty while you are taking a afternoon siesta up top.

While driving in the county, almost ran one over, never saw him until I was seconds from him. It was late afternoon and he was dressed in all black and stopped in the shade on the road, sun was behind him and he could not be seen until you were in the shade too. It seems like the people that ride are not realist about the danger, they seem to think vehicle drivers should super cater to their desire to pump those pedals.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
