DOR building: Ridgeland and Madison County enter the fray

The Ridgeland Board of Aldermen passed a resolution Tuesday night expressing support for the Ergon proposal to locate the Department of Revenue at the site on Highland Colony Parkway. The board also asked the legislature to "respect" the RFP process and cease all attempts to "intervene" in the process. Alderman-at-Large D.I. Smith moved to adopt the resolution he presented to the board. The vote was unanimous.  The Madison County Board of Supervisors passed a similar resolution the same night. The Ridgeland resolution is posted below.
Editorial note: Why not?  The Speakah jumped in. Rosemary jumped in. Blount jumped in.  Ben Allen and his crew jumped in? Why shouldn't Ridgeland and Madison County jump into this circus?

Man, DOR must really feel like the only girl at the lonely hearts dance!

Anonymous said...

God forbid the decision should be made based on the most cost effective and efficient location.

And, again we will have wasted money on objective studies that those with a political/personal muddy the waters with nonsense.

Conservative , fiscal principles don't seem to be very genuine when a government ( state or federal) will enhance your political ambitions or help your constituency or increase your community's revenues.

No mention of grounds upkeep with any of these alternatives, is there?

News flash, sidewalks don't need mowing or fertilizing or pruning!

Anonymous said...

I certainly don't think the Ergon building is the best option, but I wholeheartedly agree with their request that the RFP process be allowed to work without interference from the legislature.

Let The Process Work said...

That elected municipal and county board might 'jump in the fray'. What a concept! Should they sit on their thumbs?

Would the owner of this blog suggest that is not their right, sorry, their obligation? Who can argue against the sensibility of both of these boards suggesting the process be followed and that power-politics stay the hell out of the way?

Anonymous said...

12:00
Can't really see where the "owner of this blog" has any problem with them going after this. Maybe I'm just too dumb to read between the lines like you apparently do. I guess I could read your comment as suggesting you spend a lot of time with your thumb up your ass. You are sitting on it, right?

Anonymous said...

Is there anything the legislators WON'T interfere with, if they think it would provide them some political advantage?

Let The Process Work said...

One can tell by the tone of voice in the original post (and title) that the action of both boards is being mocked by the blog administrator, thus the 12:00 remark. Should not the blog administrator congratulate the actions of both boards in recommending the a-political process be followed, politics aside? So, yes, 12:47, it would appear that you ARE too dumb to read between the lines. All elected county and city boards with skin in this game should let their official opinion be known.

Anonymous said...

Did JJ get scooped by Yall Politics with letter from Leland, Palmer and Barksdale?

Anonymous said...

Don't matter.

The legislation is dead for this year.

The RFP process will proceed.

It will be a lease.

Anonymous said...

I hope you are right. It should be a lease in the Landmark Building downtown. Everyone wins but mostly the taxpayer wins. It's by far the best deal AND the people that own the building can rent it to the state cheaper than the state can buy it and rent it to itself. DFA is a nuthouse, they can't manage commercial property. The rent would end up needing to be 2-3 bucks a foot more to make up for their incompetence.

Anonymous said...

Can you imagine the stupidity of placing it in the Ergon property in the middle of nowhere. Word on the street is a dereliction of duty lawsuit could be on the horizon.

Anonymous said...

Where is Harvey Johnson and the Jackson City Council?

Kingfish said...

Being smart. Best thing for them to do is be quiet.

Anonymous said...

DFA is a nuthouse, they can't manage commercial property.

Really an amazing comment considering your endorsement of the Landmark and Blount's other bill SB2472 which puts more power in the hands of DFA, not less.

Anonymous said...

Odd how many times KF you've sat on that exact same comment.

Anonymous said...

The Mississippi Assembly broke into a similar factionalism in the 19th century when every village and municipality introduced a bill moving the permanent capital to an adjoining place.

Anonymous said...

Kingfish, why would you state on your radio program this week that the advocates for Landmark, in your opinion, were more hungry?

Anonymous said...

Have you asked for a copy of the Millsaps study Kingfish, not the synopsis?

Anonymous said...

David Blount and Millsaps have the copies for presentation and evidence during hearings when this advances and not for you anonymous chickenshits. It is real and not influenced by a one million dollar commission asshole.

Clinton Don't Play said...

Meanwhile; Clintonians will customer-up en masse tonite at Crechales to court a move to their burg. So far 42 have signed up to eat. Reporters with casette recorders unwelcome.

Anonymous said...

Neat little shift there. According to 9:49 PM there is no study. Only "evidence" which formed the basis of the Powerpoint presentation. No wonder why Blount can't release the study, there isn't one.

Kingfish said...

Right now I don't have an opinion on which site to choose because......

I HAVE NOT READ A SINGLE PROPOSAL. Everything else is just lobbying.

Anonymous said...

...during hearings when this advances ...

Which won't be this year.

Anonymous said...

Cushman and Wakefield is on the DJP website...."Articles of Interest" section. Strange that the Mayor and Aldermen of Clinton have held a party, now the governments of Ridgeland and Madison have as well, and we get total crickets from our dynamic Jackson Mayor and equally impressive City Council.

That probably helps if you think about it.

Anonymous said...

Why shouldn't Ridgeland jump into the fray?

Because every now and again, politicians should realize that they work for the " people" who elected them and their " people" also live a State and a Nation, not just in their little county.

The lack to see beyond your own nose like this is exactly at the heart of our deficit spending. " Get me mine and to hell with the State or Nation".

Anonymous said...

Leland let the cat out of the bag.

Downtown Jackson Partners paid for the study, er, evidence, er, Powerpoint presentation that Blount is pushing as justification.

Anonymous said...

It was in the letter to the editor this weekend and 16 knew DJP was paying for it months ago. Leland told Stuart. BFD. Go to y'all politics and read it for yourself.

"Cat out of the bag". So juvenile.

Anonymous said...

So 10:46 do you agree with Rosemary Aultmann, that Millsaps will lie with the facts to support someone commissioning a study from them. Ie: they are whores?

Anonymous said...

Go easy on 10:46, 12:25. HE has a million reasons to feel as he does.

Anonymous said...

You might be hearing crickets February 22, 2013 at 9:18 AM from Jackson's Mayor and City Council because they want the building kept private.

Anonymous said...

So does any sane person, but the situation is what it is. The mayor and city council show no leadership in any effort ever. Give me one example of leadership by either.

Anonymous said...

Give me one example of leadership by either.

They've done an outstanding job with the high tech surface-based sewage piping system in Fondren. Every homeowner there, and especially on Crane, are pinching themselves in glee over their good luck. Property values are exploding in Fondren in anticipation of the full rollout of the new system. The public school system is crap but the shit piping system is state-of-the-art!

They will be introducing the surface shit system to Eastover next down on the river side of Meadowbrook Road. There is a lot of product to move down there, A LOT, and this system is designed for maximum effluent situations.

They don't call Jackson the new Creative Class Bastion of the Old South for nothing. Follow Quentin Twitterwell for all the latest developments.

Neither the outdated C&W study nor 'the bought and got what they paid for Millsaps' recap of the C&W study consider the Ergon/DTI building as an option.
It just became available at the end of 2012.
Why not let the DFA RFP process work?
Maybe then the true costs of fitting the DOR into one of the 3 facilities and the actual costs to operate and secure each of these buildings will actually be compared by an independent source that is not paid to reach/bias a conclusion.

Anonymous said...

Millsaps has the best business school in the state. They are not going to risk their reputation by being bullied into an answer not supported by the data.

Anonymous said...

508. You get an extra nickel from Madison chamber for working Jackson bashing into this discussion. Extra nickel for our original characterization of Quentin.

Anonymous said...

If so 5:48, then why did they not include anything in their so called study about the Ergon/DTI property?

Anonymous said...

Neither the outdated C&W study nor 'the bought and got what they paid for Millsaps' recap of the C&W study consider the Ergon/DTI building as an option.

Face it, the shortcomings you note do not remotely represent the total list. NOT ONE SINGLE LISTED MEMBER of the Millsaps evidence collection effort has ANY DIRECT EXPERIENCE in this specific area nor subject matter. Surely not Bill Brister and greenhorn Russell Morrison.

The idea that Prophet Ben and the DJP would commission anything that wouldn't confirm their desperate storyline is laughable. Only a FOOL would believe that DJP would pay for a comprehensive objective evaluation of metro area consolidation opportunities for state government.

And Prophet Ben is counting on YOU to be that FOOL.

Incoming in 3-2-1 ... but PLEASE Ben, refute without your infantile tirades. Don't be juvenile Ben.

YO. 9:58. Read Barksdale's, Palmer, Speed letter yet? Lets now hear you bash their collective stupidity.

Anonymous said...

Anyone actually dissing Millsaps and its credentials is totally grasping at straws. The Else School of Business Managment and the MBA program IS the best in the state. To intimate that Millsaps would "cheat" to obtain pre-determined results would be offensive, if not obviously spoken by a biased, conflicted observer.

I just read the Barksdale, Palmer, Speed letter. Strong. This information needs to be public BIG TIME. What has happened to the "watch our tax money" fiscally "conservative". Gunn should be ashamed. Someone earlier said something about a Senate run for him. Right.

His comments about "best for Clinton" and to hell with what is best for taxpayers makes him a political GONER statewide, no matter how this debacle turns out.

Anonymous said...

Not one of you critics has pointed out where the studies are in error.

Instead you have engaged in character assassination and accused Millsaps of " selling out" without one whit of evidence to back up any accusations made.

It is killing the messenger indeed, because you can't dispute the accuracy of the message.

Anonymous said...

Right on 9:23. Completion of what 9:52?

Kingfish said...

1. Advertisers are paying to get their message out, not debate the trolls. Some, such as Bigger Pie and MCPP, allow comments to be posted on their sponsored content. Others don't. You have the right to read this site. You don't have the right to comment on every post whenever you feel like it. Don't like it? Go to Y'all, JFP, Cottonchicken, MississippiPep, and the CL.

2. Alot of this is indeed shooting the messenger. Everyone step back and think for a second. We are all making comments without looking at a single proposal. There are three proposals. We don't know how much they are, the features offered, the renovation or alteration costs, and similar issues. We don't know. Hard to say where it should be when we don't know the proposals.

Having said that, the politics surrounding it is certainly fair game for comment and criticism. These are all big boys. They can handle it when they take actions in the public domain such as press conferences and letters to the editor.

Anonymous said...

Hey 9:49. Check out page 8 B of today's Clarion Ledger.

Anonymous said...

Not one of you critics has pointed out where the studies are in error.

There is no Millsaps study, only a presentation. It is obvious why the study, er, evidence behind the presentation isn't being released because the purchasers do not want the public to have the ability to conduct any evaluation on the work -- the scope, assumptions, data collected, analytical criteria nor the conclusions reached.

Anonymous said...

12:03 there is a Millsaps study.I was a spectator at the presntation. It is inches thick with spread sheets, footnotes, backup information the whole nine yards. Everyone at the Senate Public Properties meeting saw the entire study. Blount and Millspas have the entire study. What is so hard to grasp about this? Were you there?

You don't go to a 15 minute presentation before a political committee and hand them 3 inches or paperwork. You do an executive summary (RE: powerpoint) that is backed up with your references and data.

This is merely a smoke screen by you and others that don't like what BOTH BOTH BOTH studies recommended.

Again....let's all say together: "When you can't stand or refute the message, destroy the messenger". Saul Alinsky and the "Obama Playbook".

9:52: How can that possibly be called 'advertising' when it's nothing more than the Speedists making their tired point yet again by paying Kingfish to print it and not allow comments. What is it about the post at 5:35 that Kingfish either feels threatened by or that he doesn't want to address? What difference does it make what cyber personality makes or doesn't make a point on here? Read up a bit on logical fallacies Kingfish. It's a particularly eggregious fallacy to refuse to address a truthful, honest post because you can't, and then laying it off on dislike of the contributor.

To review; you were untruthful when you claimed the Barksdale, Speed commentary was an advertisement. No produce or service was advertised and there was no target audience identified or solicited. It was nothing more than a paid-for attempt to influence opinion on a political matter. Now, if you want to call the fellow who wrote and paid for the 'piece' a lobbyist, that would be more honest.

Anonymous said...

Blah, blah, blah.

Anonymous said...

9:32 I realize you have a reading comprehension problem so I will type slowly. You also have a vendetta against someone who started his own blog so he could do what he wants to do - you don't like it - ask for your money back, then leave.

First, no one is selling "produce" here - the Farmer's Market is long gone. If, by chance, you meant "product", you're just clueless. Political parties spent over a billion $ last year, "ADVERTISING", yet no one was asked to purchase a "produce or service". These paid postings are "advertisements" - someone is paying for access to an audience they hope to reach, for whatever reasons they have. KF is certainly allowed to decide to take their money and post their messages if he so desires.

If you don't like it - go away and start your own blog. You won't be missed.

Anonymous said...

It's 'product', not produce. And who are you addressing at 9:32 when the post was made at 9:42?

The point is Kingfish has lied to the entire readership by claiming the Barksdale/Speed 'contribution' was an advertisement. And a few of you goobs bought it. Most didn't.

As was asked in the earlier post; What product or service was being advertised, what audience was being sought? An advertisement typically solicits either a sale of a product/service or an agreement to a principle being marketed. Marketing 101. Neither existed. Again, very simply, the mouthpiece for Barksdale/Speed paid Kingfish to publish an opinion to which no rebuttal was possible. Own it.

BS. You ain't kicking nothing Ben except the goads. Your desperation is comical.

Anonymous said...

5:20; assuming (for fun's sake) your narrow definition of advertising to be all encompassing, what is it that was called to the attention of 'the public', other than the moribund, languishing opinion of Speed and Barksdale? They're desperate to get members of the legislature to buy into their theory and could not give one hoot in hell what best serves the people of the entire state. Their selfish motivation is directed solely at revitalization of a corpse, nothing more.

** Team Jackson Shoutout ** said...

Ah, yes. Now comes another young impressionable kool-aid drinking greenhorn named Matthew D. Bolian who thinks his opinion is very, very important because Prophet Ben has told him that he, Matthew, somehow, "gets it".

So with stars in his eyes, a swelling in his chest and a Team Jackson scout badge sewn to his windbreaker Ben Allen's latest devotee Matthew brings forth a "paid advertisement" op-ed column -- because the unknown Bolian is important and everyone leans in to hear what he has to say -- harping the same tired and overused claptrap that Jackson's suburbs won't be able to stop Jackson's cancer from metastasizing into their communities if patient Jackson is allowed to go terminal.

And, wouldn't you know it, the chemo to save Jackson has to be pumped directly into downtown if the patient is to be saved. Matthew's solution, as always, is the same one-note more money solution. This time, he argues, it must be the forced redistribution of economic impact dollars -- in this case gouged from the economic viability of a healthy Clinton -- back, specifically, into Jackson's downtown ghost town.

The price for the suburbs to pay for this round of chemo to save Jackson, per Matthew, is the gutting of $1.25-$2.25 million in economic impact the DOR workers leave in the Clinton area and the re-injection of those dollars into downtown. Now don't forget suburbs (wink, wink) you don't want to catch this Jackson cancer. So pay up.

It also goes without saying that Matthew takes great umbrage that Philip Gunn should even dare fight to keep this economic activity in his hometown of Clinton. Drink the "vibrant central city" kool-aid Philip, says Matthew. Drink it now, drink it heartily. You and Clinton won't survive Philip if downtown Jackson doesn't survive. Repent, see the light.

Unfortunately for Matthew his tunnel vision doesn't allow him to see that Jackson's suburbs are doing just fine, thank you, despite Jackson's nearly four decade slide into the pervasive decline borne of gross political incompetence.

Nor does Matthew understand that the people, businesses and leaders in the suburbs have heard the same sad sing-song of impending gloom leaking out of Jackson played so many times that they have simply stopped listening.

Matthew, you don't have enough experience and wisdom to see that Ben Allen is full of shit.

And Matthew, to the 67% of the metro area population who does not live there Downtown Jackson is more like the other nuisance beggars of coins standing, with cardboard sign and bucket in hand, at the northbound I55 off-ramp to County Line Road: always there, always disheveled and always begging.

Good luck Matthew. You are going to need it.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!
