JPS report cards: 82% of middle & high schools rate D or F.

Collection of JPS & Education posts

The report cards for Mississippi Public Schools are out for the 2011-2012 school year, which means it's time to take a good hard look at the marks for Jackson Public Schools. This is the first year report cards were issued under the new rating system: A,B,C,D,F. The grades for Jackson Public Schools are worse than dismal, they are downright disgusting.

NO Jackson middle or high schools earned the grade of A or B. Only two high schools and one middle school earned a C. The other 14 schools graded D or F. The elementary schools were slightly better: 3 A's, 5 B's, 13 C's and the rest were D's or F's. Let that sink in. 82% of all Jackson public middle and high schools rate either D or F. Earlier post

Thank you Jackson Public School Board. Thank you Harvey Johnson. Funny how you seem to be AWOL whenever the subject of Jackson Public Schools arises. Where is Dr. George Schimmel writing letters to the Clarion-Ledger defending these report cards? One can only imagine why he doesn't write about this problem with the same vigor he uses when attacking charter schools. Speaking of, where exactly is Nancy Loome? I don't see any tweets or Facebook posts by her as she does whenever charter schools are mentioned.

Well don't you fossils worry about it. Even though Jackson is over 80% black, the blacks are voting... with their feet. Clinton Public Schools are now 50% black. Pearl Public Schools are now 40% black. 150 years ago blacks fled the white plantations whenever possible. Blacks now flee the black educational plantation whenever they can as well as they seek to escape the chains of the educational slavery imposed upon them by Harvey Johnson and the Jackson Public School Board.

Here are are the schools and their grades. Brace yourself.

New Classification = Old Classification
A = Star
B = High Performing
C = Successful
D = Academic Watch

Number of schools improving two grades: 6
Number of schools improving one grade: 7
Number of schools falling one grade: 7
Number of schools falling two grades: 2

The elementary schools were the only ones with a true bell curve, as the number of A's and B's were equal to D's and F's. Unfortunately for JPS, that still means only 15% of all schools graded A or B while 45% graded D or F.

That is simply disgusting to see how far JPS has fallen in the 21 years since I graduated. There is no way my daughter will ever step foot inside of a JPS school.

Jackson is nothing but a giant plantation full of government subsidized slaves that can do nothing but extend a hand out for all things "free"...why would you expect anything more?

JPS has a culture of lazy and entitled. I hated having JPS workman's comp come to the clinic. Never have I seen more people work a system to not have to work. Bogus injuries and malingering was the norm. This is what is not teaching your kids. Ditto for JPD.

6:17 ~ Workers' Comp fraud and abuse are not peculiar to JPS and JPD. How to abuse that system is taught on many street corners, all barber shops and half the pulpits in the state. There are lawyers on almost every corner and certainly on every channel hustling comp fraud and abuse because it's simple to do. The Comp Commission judges (who are merely people who can fog a mirror and hold a gavel) always mete out settlements and it's the sleziest of all forms of lawyering. It's similar to the old blue house on State Street that has a dental sign out front and advertises 'We Take EBT cards'.

Bacause JPS designated your clinic a reporting point for comp injury' you got to witness the fallout of this reality. It's totally separate and apart from a pitiful education system. Just another part of our culture of entitlement.

Well, now, don't get upset. There is a straightforward solution:

If the DOE can't figure out a way to rig the numbers at any point in the next three years, AND if parents get together and vote to organize a charter school, AND if the state approves it, AND if parents can find a contractor to run the school, AND if JPS doesn't find some shady, semi-legal way to block it, the parents can have a "trigger" charter school.

If the process starts now, the school can be up and running just two years after their kids have graduated.

I don't suppose anyone would like to take a look at the average income level or average IQ of students at the schools?

And, I suppose the notion that it might be a good strategy and more realistic to start improvement at the elementary level doesn't make sense to some.

I'd love for someone to tell me how charter schools are going to change IQs and cure behavioral problems.

I'd love to see a law where the first day of school is required for parents.guardians only if their child is to receive a free education and that at least 3 appearances for designated participation at the school each year.

I'd love to have each parent sign an agreement to the rules and to certain requirements on their part.

9:03 "I'd love for someone to tell me how charter schools are going to change IQs and cure behavioral problems."

Simple - only the children of concerned, caring, motivated and involved parents would be signing up for these schools. Right now they have no choice except to attend school mixed in with the children absent sperm donors, etc, who drag down the classes for everyone. Charter schools would at least give the possibility of better outcomes to those kids motivated by parents) willing to wotk for it.

Would you for ONCE September 17, 2012 9:03 AM stop your blather and tell us what is YOUR solution to the problem.

These scores are right on par with the Jackson leadership of today. Why is anyone surprised?

Since you brought Clinton into the discussion, its worth mentioning that the CPSD rated in the top 3 in the entire state. Does not matter if they are white black or purple, Clinton will educate them and educate them well. And of course many of the families that move there (black and white)move there because education is a priority, so those kids are hearing the right things at home too. Lets don't forget that. JPS is handicapped out of the gate because so many kids show up at their doorstep because its a free day care.

Maybe i been out of school to long...what was the grading system before A,B,C,D and F were used?

Heard Thigpen on the wireless this morning. He shared (and correlated) some of the spending per pupil per district data that his shop is about to publish vs the recently released district/school ratings. The data is going to blow the mo' money CecilBrownWeeWillieWinterDickMolpusDonnaLaddBlakeWallaceNancyLoome's of our state completely out of the water.

I think these schools are just underfunded... Yeah sure they just need more money and that will solve all the issues.

As a product of JPS and a lifelong resident of Jackson it is very sad to see such a mess they have created. When are the blacks in Jackson going to wake up and expect more from the black leaders God forbid a white person complain... It would be racist.. Facts are facts., white , black, purple yellow whatever.. Poor leadership has sent JPS and the city I call home for over 40 years into the toilet
I just keep my popcorn ready for the next circus

Every time I say it can't get worse, it does. What if The Stokes Twins turn out to be triplets?

Shadowfax said...

The Stokes twins are actually products of a Jackson Octomom who has given birth to six litters of nine. If you think 'The Twins' are something............

9:16am, you've just made an argument that doesn't need the complexity of charter schools.

Simply make a time and place for concerned parents to show up . Make sure they have to go to a bit of trouble like wait in long lines and then divide those kids up into a few existing schools.

The rest of the schools will still be crappy and fail but who cares? Kids who have crappy parents shouldn't have a shot at a good education, right? They are all doomed from birth.

What a very American idea ( sarcasm)

if these scores scare or disgust any of you all, do something. Instead of sitting there talking about the school system. Let's start setting some programs and initiatives to help our children. Don't count them out just yet they are just children, help don't judge!!!

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
