Somewhere out there, Jackie Sherill (NSFW)

is thinking karma's a __________ and probably REALLY wants to kick Parterno's ass. . Remember this quote?

"When asked about retirement, Joe Paterno once said that he would not, because it would leave college football in the hands of "the Jackie Sherrills and the Barry Switzers". Paterno apologized to Switzer for the comment, but wrote in his book that he "didnt give a damn about what Sherrill felt."

Here is the grand jury report on Sandusky and I'm going to warn you, its disgusting, sickening, and very graphic. Not safe for work and it will upset some of you physically. Repeat: I can not exaggerate how revolting and sickening this report is.

Grand jury report

that is disgusting. I cant believe Sandursky's wife did not know and don't ever let your children spend the night with strange MEN.

Jackie Sherill: "I got out of college coaching because I didn't want to be around the Jerry Sanduskys and Joe Paternos of that world."

I don't think Jo Pa is an evil person, but anyone who knew about this predator and did nothing about it should be punished to the full extent of the law. People witnessed abhorrent behavior and walked away from it, not wanting to get involved. Shameful and disgusting. Call 911 and stand up for a kid, for crying out loud. How can anyone know something like this is going on and not report it? Bill Billingsley

Of course the wife knew. She was an enabler and perhaps a recruiter. All this crap about 'poor Jo Pa'. What about the 8 or nine (or 50) boys???

are you kidding? Joe Pa is not an evil person? I can't even with that statement. he raped and abused these children over and over. not just once...many times. that's not an evil person?

Take KF's warning about reading the grand jury report seriously. I read it Monday and have regretted it since -- even had a couple of nightmares.

Not saying that reading about it is in ANY way as torturous as what those children went through, just know that you are going to end up with images in your mind that will NOT go away.

Anonymous said...

It is disgusting but typical.

Pedophiles choose jobs where they have contact with children. They "groom" the children and win the confidence of the parent(s).

90% of all children are molested by someone known to them and their family.

That is why it is important to teach children to tell their parents if someone tries to touch them inappropriately.

Report suspicions of child abuse and neglect to Children's Protective Services or a Child Abuse Hotline if you are not certain enough to call the police.

Social workers who are trained to investigate reports, which can be anonymous, will.

The idea that one reports to a coach and then the coach to the principal or college president is necessary for one's job. But,to protect the victim, the witness MUST report to those authorities trained to deal with child abuse and neglect complaints.

Passing the buck up the chain of command never works as it is the institution that gets protected, NOT the victim!

This and what happened in the Catholic Church should make that clear!

The moral obligation is to protect the victim, NOT to protect an institution from scandal. It is clear that Paterno, et. al. were far more concerned about Penn State's reputation and the reputation of their football program than about the victims. Unlike the Catholic Church, they didn't even engage in the pretense of getting " help" for Sandursky or insisting he end contact with this program.

Sandursky's wife, like many others, see someone who looks "normal" and has attained respect in the community and doesn't want to believe that her judgment and that of others is so fallible. Unfortunately, the monsters who prey on children make a point of trying to blend into the community. The most successful pedophiles develop great social skills and win trust easily.

People just don't want to believe their husband, their priest, their coach whom they trusted could be a monster.

I hope this case provides a " learning curve" for parents. Grown ups who single out your child as " special" and who shower them with gifts and who seek frequent " alone" time with them should be regarded with caution if not suspicion. It's the time to ask your child alot of questions .

@901

I have seen nothing to suggest JoPa committed any sexual misconduct with children. It's all be Sandusky, thus far.

Latest rumor is that Sandusky pimped out kids to large donors. Just a rumor but wouldn't be surprised if it's factual at this point.

Sandusky ought to be a fan favorite in the institution he will be living in with all those Michigan State felons in the hole with him. Enjoy your stay Sandusky, now your will be playing catcher for some serious pitchers...

Joe Paterno got scwewed. He REPORTED something HE HEARD about an employee from ANOTHER employee to his higher ups! They in turn covered it up and lied to a grand jury! So now one can be fired for this! Whats this about "He should have done more", "Gone to the police". What if it turned out not to be true! He NEVER WITNESSED anything! Anyone at any work enviroment reports things to their superiors. In the citizen world outside of the legal system we call what he was told a RUMOR! Its amazing that the GUY that did see something STILL has his job! Why didnt he do more! Im sure the BOthey use this to get rid of him. Thats the reason. Im sure we all feel bad for the victims, but now Joe is a victim as well. Its illegal to fire WHISTLEBLOWERS! Joe blew the WHISTLE. This should be a lesson to everyone. If you HEAR something keep your mouth shut cause it could come back on you...you know SHOOT THE MESSENGER thing!!!ARD knew about the RUMOR at the time. Why didnt they do more! 9:43, JoPa is actually NOT a whistleblower. A whistleblower is someone who reports wrongdoings to someone outside an organization because the organization either has not or will not take care of the problem.

You need to go to SI.com and read the report by Michael McCann. He goes into detail about the legal responsibilily Paterno may or may not have had. He could still face criminal charges, depending on the interpretation of the Penn. Child Protective Services laws.

The question of moral responsibility is larger than legal responsibility. Paterno knew in 2002 that Sandusky was "doing something inappropriate/sexual" with a child thought to be 10-years old in Penn State facilities. Paterno knew that while Penn State banned Sandusky from coming on campus with minors after the report, that Saundusky continued his work with his children's charity.

Legal responsibility isn't what got Paterno fired, it was a failure to live up to moral responsibility.

Got to add one thing -- your sentence "I'm sure we all feel bad for the victims but now JoPa is a victim, too" has got to be one of the most disgusting things I have read in all the Paterno coverage or commentary, aside from the actual rape details in the grand jury report. If you TRULY believe that, I pray to God that no children are ever placed in your care because you clearly do not understand the gravity of child abuse.

I love college football as much as the next natural-born Southerner. But, man, you have some extremely f'ed up priorities.

Frugal Gal said...

Kapt, after reading the report on Victim 2, I wanted to drive to Pennsylvania myself and see Sandusky's balls ripped off by rabid dogs. All I could do, though, was cry for that poor little boy.

They haven't identified him, you know. Neither McCann nor Paterno, much less higher-up Penn State officials, made any effort to find out who he was and try to get him medical and psychological help.

Those kids need all prayers.

Thats got to be the biggest bunch of panty-waist knee-jerk liberal BS ive ever heard. Paterno does not run the University. Paterno saw NOTHING! Paterno was told of something! Whats JOe supposed to do? "Stand on the steps at PSU and yell HEY I HEARD SOMETHING FROM SOMEONE WHO SAID THEY SAW SOMETHING AND I HAVE TO TELL EVERYONE" And the DA was told by someone cause there was a grand jury hearing where Paterno gave a statement telling WHAT HE 'HEARD' FROM SOMEONE THAT SAW SOMETHING! If the University higher ups wanted Sandusky banned then they would have done it. The University Admin covered it up.THey covered it up, not JOE! Joe turned the guy in, the guy that saw it still has a job and he is THE WITNESS!!!! I cant imagine HOW many people from the BOARD on down had heard about what this young coach saw Sandusky do, yet JOE gets fired? You either FIRE them all or fire the people who lied to the grand jury. Its one or the other!

Anonymous said...

FYI: For all you knee-jerk libs who want Joe Pa head. There was a child rape case against Sandusky 13 yrs ago. The prosecutor Ray Gricar even had the victims mother confront Sandusky. LAck of evidence kept Gricar, who was known has tough on crime, from charing him. By the way, Gricar dissapeared in 2005.So even though there was a previous investigation JOE should have done more!!! WAIT! I 'HEARD' JOE PA killed him. IM GOING TO REPORT THIS TO THE AUTHORITIES!!!!!!

EXCUSE ME! Paterno KEPT this guy on his coaching staff! He KNEW nothing was done about a VERY SPECIFIC, disturbing EYE WITNESS report!

Passing the buck to your boss so you can blame HIM for the coverup just doesn't get it.

" Well, I told the Cardinal, I can't help it if he didn't tell the Pope or the Pope didn't do anything".

Are you F'ing kidding me? Paterno has NO responsibilty for HIS coaching staff other than to whine to the President?

Frugal Gal:
Unfortunately we live in a world where people have been taught that no one is responsible for anything. Everyone is somehow a "victim".
The poster that said that the 82- year old that ran over the child was a victim, and the poster that says that Paterno is a victim shows that that pattern of thought is well ingrained in today's society.

Anonymous said...

Paterno should have urged the witness to report to the Child Abuse Hotline and/or called himself. IF as one blogger wrote Sandusky was ALSO accused of child rape, then Paterno had his head up his own a** so he would " see no evil..."

If it's KNEE JERK Liberal to think that protecting children from pedophiles is a priority, then I'm on the wrong side of politics!

I didn't know the GOP thought keeping a good defensively coach and protecting a university's finances more important than putting a pedophile behind bars.

Frugal Gal said...

Anon 11:00, I don't know if you are related to Sandusky or Paterno and angry beyond logic, or if you've just had too much beer this morning, but your post doesn't make a damn bit of sense.

Anonymous said...

10:34 Don't worry. They will all be fired, as they should be. Anyone who knew about this and did nothing about it is morally as sick and bankrupt as a person could be.

Anonymous said...

From what I read, Sandusky's own "Second Mile" social service organization and charity knew what was going on and they did not report it either. It also seems like the Police had this guy dead to rights in 1998 when they listened in on a telephone call between one of the victim's mother and Sandusky! There are alot of people who appear to have been incompetent in this matter.

bill said...

9:00, I didn't say Jo Pa was innocent or shouldn't have done more. I simply said I didn't think he was evil. Sandusky is another story - evil through and through. BB

So - do you think Dan Jones knows Paterno is available?

Oops - too soon? ;-)

Kingfish said...

Um, who do you think ran Penn State, Paterno or the President?

Anonymous said...

The law is clear in Mississippi (and I assume in that state as well). The requirement to report knowledge or suspicion of such activity is not tempered by such judgemental gymnastics as wondering what might happen if it's not true or going through an analysis of 'how could it be true' or 'whether its true'. That's the purpose of reporting....so that it can be investigated.

Joe Pa as he is so lovingly referred to knew damned well he should have followed up but he chose the path that would most support his sainthood status and the program. To hell with the boys being abused.

While America is praising the charming ole Joe Pa, we have real leaders like Hurt in Rankin County who took the high road and benched his whole damned team for rule violations. Joe Pa takes his seat in hell alongside all the priests (also of the catholic faith) who abused or allowed the abuse of children or who covered it up.

Curt Crowley said...

425pm, According to reports, PA's mandatory reporting law provides that mandatory reporters can comply with their reporting duties by merely passing the info to their superiors (person in charge). The superior then has the burden of contacting authorities. PA does not require direct reporting to law enforcement by people in Paterno's position. Paterno sent the info to the AD, who was (in theory) the person in charge of Penn State athletics.

Not saying it's right, just saying JoePA complied with the law.

The poster above who likened this crap to activities of Catholic church officials is closer to the root of this than any of may have thought. It's a thought pattern, a practice of analysis and action and an acceptable approach to dealing with problems among Catholic elite. Paterno, although he only wears an imaginary halo and collar, thinks the same way a celibate guy in a red beanie thinks.

Anytime an organization finds itself with allegations this serious, especially the rape and forced molestation of children, you can expect a total housecleaning. I’d expect more personnel to be fired if not charged with crimes in the next few weeks. Mike McQueary needs to be fired as well based on his on his own grand jury testimony. McQueary witnessed the rape and did nothing to stop the abuse of a 10-year-old boy. He called his father and they set up a meeting with Paterno even though there are laws in Pennsylvania that requires people to notify authorites of an act such as this The Pennsylvania AG already said Joe Paterno was free from being charged but Paterno has hired a criminal defense attorney in the wake of the scandal. Paterno himself admitted that he wished he would have done more. In my mind this is an admission of some sort of moral responsibility on his part. Paterno should have resigned earlier this week and that may well have stopped the rioting last night. Instead he still thinks he has the power to chart his own destiny and finish out the season. This is beyond a university or a football team.

WMartin said...

Mike McQueary witnessed a young boy being raped and did not save him from the predator, much less call the police. What a coward and a scum bag. How can that guy sleep at night? They all acted like they didn't care. They should all be fired.

Also, what would Paterno's reaction have been if McQueary came to him and said that he saw Sandusky in the shower with his grandson?

Glad you can find some joy in this, 9:16. You're the only one, douchebag. So many on here are forgetting the victims. This isn't about a football coach. Little boys were raped by this man. Eight at LEAST...how many more? How can you witness such a horrid act and not immediately contact law enforcement? Or STOP IT!?

Anonymous said...

This isn't about the mandatory reporting act as written in PA, Curt. This is about witnessing/aiding/abetting a crime.
Mandatory reporting laws are about what is expected when one SUSPECTS child abuse or abuse is reported to you or you have evidence abuse may have occurred. It's quite something else to see a child raped or have the rapist confess to you.

Heard on the Dan Patrick Show that this is the tip of a huge iceberg. The reporter in PA who broke the story about the grand jury investigation last April ( how come it didn't get attention then, sport fans?) ,says this is going to get worse and all those defending/excusing Paterno and the gang will come to regret it.
How does setting up a charity to pimp boys to big donors to your university strike you? And, a cover up that goes way beyond the university?
The feds are now involved and it's predicted this will go nuclear.
Just think...why is McGleary still around? If they didn't believe his allegations, then he'd be a troublemaker/liar, wouldn't he? Instead he's been working and socializing with Sandusky for quite a long time. And, the board didn't fire him...why not? Why aren't they angry that he didn't inform THEM when no one else acted? How come Paterno didn't inform THEM when the President didn't act? How come Sandusky was officially banned from taking showers with boys years ago and what was up with the temporary retirement? Pedophiles love to take photos and share them on the 'Net, reckon the feds, who can better look will turn up any?

Kingfish said...

There is speculation he might have whistleblower protection since he reported it to his superiors. Just what I've read. I think he should be fired unless there is a good legal reason not to do so.

coach and whistle blower all in one?

I read today a couple things I did not know. Sandusty has a son who is/was a close friend of the young coach, McGleary. They both were raised in State College, PA, went to the same schools and played high school football together and then attened PSU where they both played football. I am not defending this young coach, but can you imagine going into that shower and seeing your friend's Father, a man you had known your entire life and someone who was your former college coach having sex with a 10 year old? I have no doubt this young coach went into almost shock. He very well didn't even know what he was doing at this point. He knew he needed help, and he sought it from a person he trusted, his Dad.

Paterno ran that school, the school didn't run him. See the employees he had fired because they dared to discipline players.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required.
