Good job, JFP.

"MPB fired reporter XXXX XXXXX in July after the station searched its mail servers, discovering that XXXXX forwarded an internal e-mail to the Jackson Free Press using his work account. (XXXXX freelances for the JFP and is friends with staff members.) The e-mail showed that MPB's decision to pull "Fresh Air" came less than 24 hours after its July 7 show aired with a reference to sex." Article

Of course, the MPB reporter should have known better than to forward a company email on company servers using company email address. By the way, mentioning this in the article is going to make sources trust the distinguished Jackson publication even more. Send confidential email to the JFP, get fired for it, and then get your name mentioned in story for doing so. A potential employer will LOVE seeing this reporter's name in this article when he applies for a job. The author of this article would've been better off omitting the name of the reporter in question. Nice. Unlike the JFP, this website didn't print his name so he wouldn' tbe harmed by the search engine demons.

Had someone inside the JFP sent you damaging source data from a JFP email address and had you run with the story complete with documentation only a JFP insider could have accessed you can bet your lack nickel Stauffer would be pouring through the records to discover the identity of the offender.

You are correct. However, I would know he would be doing it SO I would think of another way to get the information or use some good ole counter-plays. Reporter should've known better and printed it out.

I'll bet you that wasn't the first document the reporter leaked to the JFP in violation of the employment agreement. The reporter should have known better. But I have no doubt that this young man's behavior to leak had been cultivated and was encouraged by a key individual who, no doubt, convinced him in this instance that Judy Lewis was wrong and that it was the right thing to do to expose her.

Except for that document, I seriously doubt MPB had anything worth leaking other than Gene Edward's love letters to himself.

Lots of internal communications gets leaked to Ladd from young idealistic metro area media types because she cultivates the leaks. Lewis' time in the job was controversial internally from an early point. If you want to believe that was the only document then feel free to naively believe so.

JFP Person of the Day for August 16, 2010
Former MPB reporter XXXX XXXXXX

"Honestly, if I didn't get fired for this, it would've been for something else like budget cuts or any other unforeseen circumstance," he [former MPB reporter XXXX XXXXXX] says. "In a business like that, it's just really hard to keep your mouth shut, especially when something is going wrong right in front of you in your own agency."

Kingfish said...

Yeah, I know. Knew it was published, just saw it again today and felt like pointing it out. You'd expect the publication to exercise some responsibility and protect the name of the source from public disclosure even if his employer knew.

Why shouldn't potential employers know what kind of character this person has? Why deceive them into thinking he is honest? Let him/her take the consequences for actions he/she chose.

It is the city's "smart alternative."

This kid is so stupid I'll bet he doesn't truly understand what he has done. He has now told everyone in a braggadocio manner that he can't be trusted to keep confidential info confidential if he perceives something to be "wrong". It is one thing to think it, another thing to share with friends but beyond stupid to say that to the JFP in an interview that he had to have known would be published.

Where was that dude's mentors?

Oops, my bad, I forgot, his mentors were at the JFP.

Unbelievable, the title shouldn't be Breaking News, it should have been, "Leak to JFP Results in Firing of MPB Reporter".

This is an entertaining little soap opera........pretty sad cast, though.

10:51, I have been out of town and just catching up. First, you assume this reporter's employment file/record was free of blemishes. You are dead wrong. He was about to be fired for cause. Dr. Lewis's time was was controversial internally because she wanted the employees of MPB to be accountable for their actions. You must work there or you would never had made that comment.

The email the reporter leaked was obtained via a conventional public records request straight from MPB, whose inside communications are subject to FOIA laws because they're a state agency that receives tax dollars. It wasn't the smartest thing to do for him to send the email directly from his work account, but it also definitely wasn't confidential, seeing as MPB internal emails are in the public domain.

Kingfish, someone with as much legal experience as you claim to have should know this. The reporter spoke out in public about why he did what he did, unapologetically with bravado. And the "search engine demons" all show overwhelming support and a blogosphere-generated hero/martyr narrative on the side of the reporter. In blue states, I'd say a reporter standing up to media censorship would be applauded, not jeered. I'd wager the young man's job opportunities in more liberal markets have widened since he went public.

On the other hand, Dr. Lewis resigned amidst months of bad press with her name attached and refused requests for an interview. If anything, this is a bold display of will and honesty on the reporter's part and a lack of spine on Dr. Lewis' part.

Leaking was one thing, bragging about it in an interview is different. Since you obviously have not applied for a job in the last few years, let me tell you what happens.

They google your name and your email address. An employer sees that, he can forget about being hired. I also understand he had gotten in trouble for writing letters to CL as well. He will learn the hard way I guess. My contention is with the editors for not protecting him better. Its one thing for MPB to know it, its another for the whole world as well.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
