Do NOT buy HP laptops

Bought an HP dv9700 laptop right at two years ago. Damn screen went black. Boots up fine, its working, just can't see anything. Love this laptop. 17 inch screen, numeric keypad on the right. Was nice, was bein the key word. Do my research online and find out the Nvidia graphics card is built into the motherboard and is defective. Wonderful. Countless stories online about this and HP refuses to issue a recall or pay for repairs for this problem although it has for other models that had the same issuebut they want you to spend $400 for a repair. Nice. Last time I buy HP ever. Meanwhile I am typing away on an 8 month old Dell that is beat up to hell but like a 70 caddy, keeps on going.

I know you do not want to here this but since I went Apple I have no problems. I have a Mac Air, Iphone and the new IPad and I am in heaven and my 3rd dell is my last along with all the expensive antivirus software. I am not a electronic junkie just love the simple life with Apple.

Did you mean an 8 year old Dell? Surely an 8 month old wouldn't be beat up!

apple. apple. apple.

Just had this happen. Take the battery all the way out and leave it out for 30 seconds. Plug it back in and see what happens. That reset my laptop and now it works.

Done that several times. Doesn't work. Happened a couple of months ago and that tricked work. Not anymore. Now I see it is probably the card.

I know what you mean JJ. I am typing on a trusty almost five year old Dell that keeps going and going. It's been a jewel. If it went up in smoke today, I would not complain about it.

My 2 year old Dell laptop at home did the same thing last week. I had to get out the 13 year old Dell that's slow as hell and has to be restarted every hour. But, it still works.

I have only purchased Compaq/Dell since 1985. I am on my second HP laptop, my first one went out after 7 years, I always get extended warranty on mine. Have no complaints. My grandson's Toshiba went out, and my wonderful tech was able to get a replacement screen for it and it works fine now.

my child's two year old Toshiba wouldn't charge and wouldn't run off the cord either. took it to Ridgeland Computer and when I described the problem and told them I'd bought an $80 battery that didn't work and needed to buy a new cord, they knew immediately that it was neither. the damn thing shorted out inside the 'puter and Toshiba would fix it for almost $300 up front and you have to ship it to them. they said it happens ALL the time to Toshibas. well, that computer gets ditched then and there. will never buy another Toshiba product since they obviously know they have a common flaw in these laptops and won't do flip about it.

my child is getting a new Apple to the tune of $1,500 or so. I'm told it will be worth it.

Damn...so THAT'S what happened!

So, I guess because I have a Compaq that is essentially an HP, I'm f-d. Well, I've been lucky. Only complaint is the battery. Its a laptop obviously, but the screen is damn fine. Also, I am of the opine, Apple is in my future. Funny but the iPhone has convinced me, and my bro who is sworn to the brand. And, if I remember correctly, while Jobs control issue is not pretty, they make a damn fine computer. Oh, and their software works.

So, typing away on an HP, but when this one craps out, Apple all the way. iPad baby!!!

From my Dell Latitude D-610 that is by far the best piece of computing hardware I have ever owned. Not fancy, not pretty. It's just like a old .45 Colt. It gets the job done without mess, flash or fuss and is 100% reliable.

KF, did you check to see if you are under the replacement/ recall program? Here is some info. Looks like HP is going to bite the bullet and do the right thing.

8:29, enough said from your poor jealous pathetic self.

Had the same problem with mine. Took it into my computer shop and they replaced a part for $55. All is good now but I still have an old Dell that weighs a ton as a backup.

8:29 pm go check out FML, it may be appropriate for your angst...

That recall by HP doesn't include this series. Apparently its a design defect in the card itself, HP does not recognize it as such, and the internet is filled with horror stories over this model.

Apple is the only way. Have you checked out their stock lately? It has done very well over the last week. I will never own a Dell again. My Dell had anti-virus protection and was still so slow. Apple's are extremely fast and virtually virus free.

It has been one of the best investments I have ever made.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
