Review of news/open thread

Here it is. Fire away.

Got to love government in action. We STILL have a bunch of non-working sirens in Hinds County:
"Hinds County has yet to replace any of its 51 warning sirens that either do not work or are outdated.
A year ago, several of the sirens didn't go off before tornadoes touched down in parts of Hinds County and Jackson.
The county in November got a $550,000 disaster-mitigation grant from the state to replace 10 of the sirens, some of which date to the 1950s
..."

If you think that is all there is to THIS cluster, guess again. Larry Fisher shows why Hinds um, leads the state in, well, you know:
"Emergency Management is responsible for the sirens and tests them at noon on the first day of every month. But the county wouldn't know if one isn't working unless someone calls it in, Emergency Operations Director Larry Fisher has said"

In continuing the tradition of current and past chiefs of JPD, a JPD officer was arrested for domestic violence. Check out his name: Cazinova Reed.

Yes, I know about the Zata poll and about Mac endorsing Crisler. I'll comment about those two items later.

Marshall Ramsey has a great cartoon about Frank. Unfortunately, there is too much truth in his humor today.

No updates on the Irby case, as everyone anticipates the D.A.'s presenting the case to the Grand Jury.

This case is over on the Mississippi Court of Appeals website and is very um, interesting to say the least. Ware v. Ware was sealed at the trial court level but it was released by the Court of Appeals and has been passed heavily among high-falootin' Jacksonians during the last year. It's rather interesting and having a drink in hand while reading it is definitely recommended.

Jackson recorded its 13th homicide this year. Jackson is thus on pace to have only 52 homicides, a decrease of more than 20 from last year. Apparently production has fallen while managers blame the recession, when actually homicide production should increase during tougher economic times. Clearly Jackson needs to get its act together.

Here is a blast from the past at Y'all Politics as Brad Chism's past polls are called into question, as it's quite clear they are not truly scientific polls but instead violate most basic principles of accurate polling. It's a good thread to read and today would have qualified for a "Food Fight!" post on JJ.

Mish has a great post on how much the government has been forced to adjust its numbers on unemployment in the negative direction as unemployment is much worse than initially reported. Did I mention unemployment is currently 8.5% and Obama's budget is based on an 8.1% rate? Does anyone think it will decrease in the next year?

Want some more proof Geithner and Obama are helping their banker friends? The Washington Post reports they want their Daddy Warbucks buds to escape any scrutiny by Congress, you know, we the people, that good government sort of thing, when it comes to bailouts.

See the JFP twitter teaser? "Wondering who would win the mayoral primary if Jacksonians went to the polls today??"

Ware certainly was enlightening. Wonder if the former Mrs. Ware got a discount at Maison Weiss?

I liked the part where the wife claimed she should get the prenup thrown out because she didn't read it.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, that was funny too. The whole thing was funny. Especially the appeal because she said he couldn't divorce her because he 'condoned' her behavior. 'Dangit, you can't divorce me, you *knew* I was cheatin' on you! and you didn't say nuthin' or something. LOL.

But what I don't understand is why they married to begin with. He cheated, she cheated, everybody cheated. Maybe they didn't recite that 'forsaking all others' part. Then again, since they'd both cheated on one another for years, why get divorced?

I guess I'm just not hip enough to understand them. My life is fairly boring. Thank goodness.

On another topic. Read Karl Denninger lately? What do you think of this rally, bear market suckers rally?

And on one more topic. What's up with the Krystal drive through incident with that chick lawyer? I'd just had a baby when all that happened so I missed out on all the details.

The markets will retest the bottoms before the bull returns. It will take a while.

Kingfish said...

We haven't hit bottom yet. read my post from a couple of weeks ago about bear market rallies. The table I posted will be quite interesting to you. What you are seeing are dead cat bounces and a market so hungry for any good information it will shoot up then come back down a week or two later.

If you can trade quickly, you can make money off of these bounces.

Also pay attention to the volume. Last week or it was the week before there was a big rally but when you took out the bank stocks, the volume was very low.

and the more I read that case, the more I think page 4 was a set-up. Had to be. And she was stupid enough from what I read to fall for it.

Was pg 4 the sleepover? I thought the SAME thing.

Yup. It was enough times to fit the pattern needed for adultery and gee, he had no problems fessing up to it when asked by the injured party.

Yeah, but nobody held a gun to her head & made her visit the irresistible Mr. Irby. (C'mon, from that pic the CL ran of the 'wonderful family' he looks 70. Seriously, it looks like dad, daughter and grandkids)

Hubby and I have had plenty of male guests stay over during hunting season and I seem to have restrained myself from visiting the guest bedroom. Every single time. Then again, if drunk grandpa Irby visited, who knows...LOL. Although, Ew, old man sex. pretty sure no amount of money could persuade me to do that.

I still ask, "why'd they get married?". Clearly neither one could handle the 'forsaking all others' part. It's good they were too old to have kids together. Can you imagine being one of their kids? (the ones they had before they married each other). Poor things. "my parents, the swingers..."

How embarassing.

I think its a bear market suckers rally myself. I'm short the market. Very short the market. I think the bottom is somewhere around 2000. Maybe a year from now. Maybe two. Check out the historical precedent between 1929 and 1933. There was a 60+% bear market rally in 1930 after the 'crash' of '29. Ultimately though, the market ended up at nearly 90% off the 1929 pre-crash high though.

We will have fun with inflation though between now and 2012. Anybody remember the 70's when you went grocery shopping? My grandmother told me that milk went up like 0.15c every time she bought it. Scary.

Too many thoughs in the last sentence of next to last paragraph. I plead lack of sleep with teething toddler.

Kingfish said...

yeah but it was great reading. I love that comment.

Yup, you are right about the bear market rally. I post this stuff for a reason.

Actually, I started posting all of this economic stuff over the last 8 months for a reason. Denninger's predictions a year ago wound up being very accurate. Then as the economy become more of an issue, I started noticing how for the average guy here in jackson, there is very little adequate business coverage unless someone is already in the appropriate industries and then he is not going to need this info anyway. the CL is pitiful on this subject and the MBJ does not do a good job in my opinion. The blogs cover politics more than they do anything else. So what I've done is add about 5 websites to my feeds: Zero Hedge, Market Ticker, Mish, Marketwatch, and Commercial Real Estate. I added BR Business report because I'm from BR and its a great publication and MBJ doesn't even offer a feed. I'm knowledgeable about the housing industry so I'll comment on that stuff but I've been learning some about the markets so I post things that other laymen such as myself might find useful. The goal is if you come to my site and check the feeds and what I post from time to time, you'll have a better idea about the economy and business world than you will from reading the local media. You might not find the latest stat or plant opening here but hopefully you'll find more actually useful info.

as for the Ware case, too bad the trial court sealed the record. I bet the depos were very interesting.

Do you think the Jackson area is just behind the curve with respect to the housing bubble and we'll see a lot more foreclosures this summer? Or, do you think we never really did bubble and will sort of just stagnate now.

?

Kingfish said...

Never really did the bubble. Housing went up but not that much. didn't go up as much so don't have as far to fall.

Had to ask that. Hubby and I looked at houses in Madison about 2 years ago. Priced in the $500K+ range. Looked at MLSOJ several months ago or so and a couple of the houses were still for sale (or for sale again already) with $395K being the top end for them now. All but one stated a 'buy for' and a 'rent for' price.

What will the Madison mayor do when they all turn into crack houses? LOL.

Have you seen the graph on zillow for the housing prices in modesto over the past 10 years? Go look. Absolutely amazing. And I'm not sure they're at the bottom yet there either.

Kingfish said...

Warning about Zillow. I've looked at them in the past and too often their information is very inaccurate. Old and too often they are using tax assessor information, which ALWAYS undervalues the house.

The houses over $200,000 in this area always fluctuate. I remember when Fox Bay was built up, near the end they were asking nearly $300,000 for some of the houses 9 months later those prices came down to $225,000 or so. There was alot of overbuilding in Madison and Brandon and its coming down because frankly, there are only so many people in this area that can afford house notes over $1200 a month.

Anonymous said...

I always wondered about that. When I saw all those houses in the $500K+ range. I mean, doctors surely can afford those. Some lawyers. There are a few successful businessmen that can afford that. But whole neighborhood after neighborhood of them? I just couldn't imagine where the money was coming from. I never geussed it was created 'whole cloth' from lies. I'm kinda slow that way I guess. Too trusting.

Makes me wonder how many of my neighbors are living on a shoestring with the boats and new cars and granite countertops. Some of them surely can actually afford that stuff. The rest? Hmmm.

Point taken about Zillow. Even so, the local tax 'revenuers' will have fun this year vs. 3 years ago cuz things have gone from an average of $300k+/house in '06 to last I looked less than $100k/house. BIG drop. Glad I don't actually own a house there now. Because the locals will be looking to make up the difference between the taxes that were EXPECTED vs. taxes they actually got from the unfortunates who still own there.

Dumb question. Do the banks that now 'own' the foreclosed properties have to pay the property taxes on those? Is that maybe one reason the banks are supposedly not 'accepting' foreclosures anymore out there?

Kingfish said...

You own it, you pay the taxes or else the county county goes the tax sale route.

Anonymous said...

OH yeah. Things'll get interesting in Madison 'toot sweet'.

Just wait till the wrong sort of people buy foreclosures.

Just wait.

Maybe the Madison'll buy them and bulldoze them? They could hire Melton.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
